Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) are educated and trained to evaluate individual health needs, and provide active and passive techniques for patient care. RMTs provide an accurate assessment, differential diagnosis of specific soft tissue and musculoskeletal conditions. RMTS treat the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems to improve patient health

Education and Training

BC graduates of the massage therapy program are individuals who have attend a 2-year rigorous education program. To become an RMT in BC, students must complete extensive training at an educational program recognized by the College of Massage Therapists’ of BC.  Core curriculum of the educational program includes comprehensive studies in health sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology and neuro-anatomy. Other areas of study include clinical sciences such as manual skills, orthopedics, remedial exercise, hydrotherapy and patient education. The management of chronic diseases, injuries and the effects of long-term stress are also studied.

Individuals seeking registration as a RMT in BC and who have attended an educational program from outside British Columbia not recognized by the CMTBC must do the following:

Recognized Massage Therapy Education Programs

In BC, a number of institutions offer massage therapy education programs. If you are planning to enroll in a BC massage therapy education program, with the goal of becoming a registered massage therapist (RMT), keep in mind that only graduates of programs offered by institutions that are registered with and accredited by the Private Training Institutions Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education Agency (PTIB) and recognized by the College of Massage Therapists’ of BC (CMTBC) are eligible to write the registration exams.
